In Steps: How to Install and Manage Extensions in Google Chrome

Almost 64% of people browsing the Internet are using Google Chrome. With the growing popularity among users and with active support from the Google developers community, chrome extensions are becoming more popular to facilitate the extension in functionalities of the browser. As of now, Chrome extensions are only available for browser versions, not for mobile app versions.

According to Google, “Extensions are small software programs that customize the browsing experience.”

They have application in everything you can possibly think of while browsing. Some of the most popular Chrome extensions with millions of users are AdBlock Plus  (blocks advertisements from websites), Grammarly ( corrects your typing as well as grammatical errors on any website you type in your browser), Evernote Web Clipper (save clipped notes from any webpage for referring to later).

So, let's check how these extensions work. Mentioned below is how to install them, use them and also how to uninstall them from chrome.

Installing and adding the Chrome Extension

Just like we have Google Play Store for mobile applications on Android,  Chrome Web Store has chrome extensions. Here are the steps to go ahead:

Step 1: Move to the search bar of Chrome web store, search for your extension. Alternatively, you can also add filters or directly visit the extension page from a landing page.

Step 2: Once you are on the landing page of the Chrome extension you are looking for, click ‘Add to Chrome’. In case you are not logged in to Google, you would be required to do so.

Step 3: A confirmation pops up on your screen, click ‘Add Extension’ to begin the CRX file download. The button now changes to ‘Checking’ and the CRX file should begin downloading as well.

Once done, the Chrome extension should be successfully added to the top right corner, just beside the URL/address bar of your browser.

Using the Chrome Extension

Once added, all you need to do is log in/sign up to the extension (not in all cases, but in some cases you would have to create an account), and you are all good to go!

Uninstalling a Chrome Extension

Removing a Chrome extension is quite simple and involves just a couple of steps ideally:

  1. In the Chrome browser, move your cursor to the icon of the extension you want to uninstall. Right-click on it.
  2. In the menu that appears, select ‘Remove from Chrome’ .

You are done! The icon should disappear from the screen after this.

In case the icon doesn’t appear on the screen, follows these steps to remove:

  1. At the top right corner you will see 3 vertical dots click on it and select More tools > Extensions.
  2. On to the extension you want to remove, click ‘Remove’.
  3. Confirm by clicking ‘Remove’.
